Trying to stabalize after yesterdays bloodbath as the Dow fell 237 points on good volume. The advance/declines were positive. The summation index is beginning to stall. Both the NASDAQ and S&P 500 posted gains with the NASDAQ leading the way. That's a plus for the bulls. The jobs report came in better than expected. That led to a rally from the start but the rest of the session was spent in a sideways to lower channel with the S&P closing well off of its highs. The short term indicators there are moving sideways in oversold territory. Still above the 200 day moving average for now on the S&P. Gold lost forty bucks on the futures. The US dollar was higher and interest rates had minor gains. The XAU was up 8 1/3 and GDX added around 1 3/4. Volume was average. Gold down and the gold shares up is a positive for the gold share bulls. GDX closed above the daily down trend line and that is another plus. The short term indicators there are still moving higher with some now overbought. The next upside target would be the 200 day moving average at 90. Barrick earnings before the bell on Monday might get things going one way or the other. My GDX November calls are still showing a small profit with two weeks left in the November option cycle. Mentally I'm feeling a bit tired. The VIX was lower today and some of its short term indicators are turning around from overbought territory. However it closed well above the 20 level so volatility still rules for now. Plenty of technical damage done to many of the stock index charts this week. We've got inflation data on tap for next week. I would still hold a cautious approach to the markets going forward even though many are short term oversold. I'll be checking the charts over the weekend as usual. Europe and Asia were down with the exception of India to close the week overseas. It's Friday afternoon and time for a break.
